BATTLE RITUAL
Two male sharp-tailed grouse participate in a battle ritual that as been ongoing for ages. But the leks where these odd and amusing mating dances occur are slowly being abandoned as the open-space prairie grassland habitat disappears. Efforts such as the Lake Superior Landscape Restoration Partnership that completed a three-year project in 2018, relocating 160 sharptails from northwestern Minnesota to the 22,000-acre Moquah Barrens in Bayfield County, are positive steps forward.
