GREY CLOUD PRAIRIESCAPE

This scientific and natural area (SNA), managed by Friends of the Mississippi, showcases a variety of native plant communities. Uplands host dry prairie, oak woodland and savanna, while lowlands along the river contain a floodplain forest of elm, silver maple, cottonwood and box elder. BAKER WONDERLAND

After receiving over 4 feet of snow in a week, Mt. Baker reveals herself and all her glory. A welcome sight after arriving at Artist Point the evening before, completely covered in clouds, the landscape was an absolutely blank white canvass, without definition, and incredibly disorienting. A COMEBACK STORY

Two Trumpeter Swans enjoy each others company in the fading winter light. The trumpeter swan was a widespread and relatively common breeder throughout the prairies and parkland regions of Minnesota until the mid-1800s. As central and western Minnesota were settled, this large, conspicuous bird quickly became over-hunted. When the first official species status review by the state was conducted in 1984, the last record of a wild breeding population in Minnesota was found to be from about 1885. As a result, the trumpeter swan was considered extirpated in the state. Subsequent recovery efforts have resulted in more than 2,400 free-flying birds in Minnesota. Down in a hollow in the Minnesota River Valley, maple leaves turn golden yellow. Shooting fall scenes like this has proven to be very difficult for me. GLACIAL SPLASH

A chunk of ice from the Margerie Glacier calves into Glacier Bay. Margerie Glacier is approximately 21 miles long and its face is 350 feet tall, with 100 feet of it submerged in the tide-waters of Glacier Bay National Park. Like a conveyer belt, ice from Margerie Glacier flows down from the Fairweather Range at a rate of 2,000 feet per year! While most glaciers in the park are retreating, the Margerie Glacier is actually considered to be stable. Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

REACHING THE STARS

Joshua Trees stretch their branches skyward as pre-dawn light begins to brighten the horizon. The name "Joshua tree" is commonly said to have been given by a group of Mormon settlers crossing the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century: The tree's role in guiding them through the desert combined with its unique shape reminded them of a biblical story in which Joshua keeps his hands reached out for an extended period of time to guide the Israelites in their conquest of Canaan.
