When we showed up to the Spider Meadows and Phelps Basin trailhead, we could hardly find a parking spot. Luckily, this is a launching spot for a variety of trails and long loops, which meant the hikers were widely dispersed, and the trail wasn’t nearly as crowded as we thought it would be. The hike started out very pleasant; a well maintained trail following Phelps Creek with a nice mellow climb, sunny skies with some nice puffy clouds, temperatures in the 70’s, the gorgeous, U-shaped valley where Spider Meadows was abounding with wildflowers. Then, around 2 pm or so, after we had reached Phelps Basin, the rain and lightning started, and lasted through the entire night. It never let up for more than a minute which made for some pretty miserable camping. Luckily, the morning rewarded us with dry skies and a beautiful sunrise.
